5 keys to job hunting without tipping off your boss

5 keys to job hunting without tipping off your boss5 keys to job hunting without tipping off your bossWhen JaNaea Modest of Champaign, Illinois, went to a job fair at a middle school on herbei lunch break, she thought she was doing everything right. She changed her clothes, headed over, filled out the application and returned to work, assuming no one would be the wiser.Little did she know a local TV news crew was filming the event, and she ended up literally broadcasting her job-hunting intentions to her current employer. If you, too, are thinking about finding a new job, the time may be right. The near-record unemployment rate presents the ideal conditions for looking for a new position that will boost your salary and/or your responsibilities. In fact, one survey finds that nearly 60% of employees say they would jump ship due to a more appealing offer. But even if something better is around the corner, you dont want to tip your hand to your current employer that you are looking. And w hile Modests scenario is rare, fortunately, it is still important to cover your tracks when youre job hunting while already employed. Here are five tips to help you hunt for a job on the sly (and watch for TV cameras).Use LinkedIn discreetlyYour first stop will probably be to spruce up your LinkedIn profile and thats smart, but you want to make aya not to be overly obvious with your online tracks, says Wayne Breitbarth, author of The Power Formula for LinkedIn Success Kick-start Your Business, Brand and Job Search. If in the past youve used your LinkedIn account sparingly and all of a sudden theres a flurry of activity, that could present a big red flag to your boss. But theres an easy way to avoid sending a notice every time you make a change. Just go to your Settings and Privacy and in the Privacy menu, make sure the Sharing profile edits button in the How others see your LinkedIn activity menu is toggled over to No. That will turn off the notifications to your network about the pro file changes you are making and you can update your profile as much as you like. Also, Breitbarth recommends you make the most of the platforms job-assistance capabilities by setting your career interest preferences in the LinkedIn Jobs Tab setting up job search alerts and following companies, where youll be notified of job postings and employment changes at the company.Work with a recruiterNot only do industry-specific recruiters often have a line on jobs not readily detected, but they can also discreetly send out messages on your behalf. Recruiters are used to maintaining confidentiality during the search and are well versed in how to contact you at work without raising suspicion, says career coach Toni Patterson. They will also know which companies to avoid - which can be hard to decipher in some blind job postings - and then relay your confidentiality concerns to vermgen employers.Interview on the sly.You dont have to end up on the TV news to have people in the office wonder abo ut your interview plans. Dress and timing are the two places youre most likely to slip up, says Debra Boggs, co-founder of DS Professional Coaching.First, avoid coming to work overdressed. Instead she recommends leaving a pressed suit or dress in a garment bag in your car - drape it flat on the seat, not hanging up where everyone will notice it walking by - and leaving early enough to calmly change and freshen up in a public restroom, one that is neither at the interview location or your current office. And then make sure you take ample time for the meeting, reminds Boggs. If youre interviewing with more than one person, try to take a half day off and not squeeze it into the middle of the day, she advises. That way, you can be flexible if the company wants to extend your interview or have you meet additional people. And of course, then you wont feel rushed traveling to the interview site and can arrive on time, calm and organized when you walk in.Another option would be to schedule it near the end of the day when you wont have to head back to the office, suggests Patterson. But be careful about having too many doctors appointments, as that can raise suspicionsor make people wonder if you have a mysterious ailment.Stay completely off company systemsWhile a phone or video interview might be another way to avoid too many meetings, make sure you plan those offsite, rather than in a conference room at your office. Theres too much risk that someone might pop their head in to greet you, and youll be distracted by the need to stay covert. And dont ever use your work computer, much less your work email, for job hunting. Your employer might be reading communications even if you are unaware, and it could be a violation of company policy to use any equipment for personal uses. Finally, dont check out just yetEven if you have a wandering eye, remember who is still signing your paycheck - and that the grass might not actually be greener. So, maintain your focus on your curr ent work, and who knows a new opportunity or salary bump may pop up right where you are.

Study Pets may be part of the solution to fight against this disorder

Study Pets may be part of the solution to fight against this disorderStudy Pets may be part of the solution to fight against this disorderWe all love our furry friends. They put smiles on our faces with their wake-up kisses, and their cuddles are just what we need after a long day at work. But a recent study has found that dogs and cats can do even more than we previously thought for their human best friends. For people with treatment-resistant major depressive disorder, pets may even make a difference in their prospects for remission.Treatment-resistant major depressive disorder (TR-MDD) is a severe disease, with very low remission rates, according to the study, published in the Journal of Psychiatric Research. When researchers asked 80 patients to adopt pets, 33 of them chose to do so, and the results were a major breakthrough. When the new pet owners were compared to a control group of patients who refused to adopt pets, they had higher remission and response rates and tested better on scales meant to rate depression symptoms.Of course, a dog or cat isnt medicine, and all of the patients in the study continued to use their usual pharmacotherapy, according to the authors. But the results do seem to indicate that pets can help some people who are suffering from mental illness, and patients for TR-MDD should be encouraged to adopt a pet if they are open to it.Sometimes, heroes look like a man or a woman in a cape flying through the sky on the big screen. But other times, theyre a fluffy puppy who makes life that much better just with his presence. As scientists continue to explore what emotional support and therapy animals can do for mental health, its exciting to see that some people are getting the help they need from a new friend.

How to Have Total Confidence in Any Stressful Situation

How to Have Total Confidence in Any Stressful SituationHow to Have Total Confidence in Any Stressful SituationThis article is from our friends at DailyWorth, a premier site on all things related to money, career, and entrepreneurship. My sister was recently job-hunting and got a call back from a firm after shed already accepted a position elsewherbeie. Still, she decided to go to the bewerberinterview just for practice, and when the big day finally rolled around, she realized she felt completely different than she had in the past before an interview. Because there was nothing riding on the outcome, she wasnt nervous at all. The upshot? She totally killed it. She answered tough questions without skipping a beat- for instance, when the hiring manager remarked that shed job-hopped, she confidently defended her career path instead of apologizing or making excuses. She also asked for mora money than she otherwise would have, backing up her salary request with details about why she deserved more than the average candidate. The hiring manager was impressed, and after two more rounds of interviews, she met with the CEO.Her experience made me realize just how crucial a self-assured attitude is. In fact, research shows that confidence is a greater predictor of success than talent is. The problem, of course, is that the situations when you fruchtwein need a boost also tend to be the most stress-inducing. Read on for tips to attain the kind of charismatic confidence that will help you navigate even the trickiest situations with ease.1. Pitching a ClientThe most stressful thing about meeting with a potential client is that youre in unfamiliar territory. To amp your confidence in this high-anxiety scenario, try this technique from career expert and job coach Lea McLeod Visualize yourself delivering the pitch. Really observe every detail, as though it were a movie screen. See yourself walking through the door and straightening your posture. Picture the people in the room. Watc h yourself talking and moving back and forth as you click through your PowerPoint slides. Going through practice runs in your mind will train your muscle memory, she explains, So when the time comes to really perform, youll feel much more comfortable in your skin. Also, inoculate yourself against one of the biggest confidence suckers being asked a difficult or critical question. If you anticipate unexpected or uncomfortable moments and prepare for them, youll be less likely to become flustered in the moment, says McLeod. Brainstorm tough questions that might come up, and plan what to say if someone stumps you. (Thats a terrific question. I wouldnt want to give you misinformation, so let me come back to you tomorrow with a solid answer, or some such.)2. Asking for a RaiseRequesting money is never fun, but doing some prep work can give you a much-needed boost before having that loaded conversation. Take stock of specifically what youve achieved for the company- in terms of growth, sale s, margins, and so on. A raise should be tied to the value that you present an organization, says McLeod. And your confidence comes from knowing youve had a measurable impact. Seeing how youve contributed will solidify why, exactly, you deserve a raise, and having solid evidence to support your proposal is much more convincing than simply asking for a higher salary because its time.During the conversation with your boss, hone in on how youve improved the companys bottom line. Try something like, Based on xyz evidence, I hope youll agree that Ive had a positive impact. My proposal is that I should be higher up on the salary curve. What would I have to do to move my compensation from the 40% range to 60%? suggests McLeod.3. Going to a Job InterviewThe secret to acing an interview is to reframe the situation Knowing youre being judged is off-putting, so remind yourself that a job interview is about more than receiving a stamp of approval from the hiring manager, says McLeod. Youre on a level playing field Not only are you being evaluated, but equally, youre evaluating the company. Instead of going in with the attitude of, I hope I get the job, focus on whether accepting the position would be the right decision for you. Youll naturally give off a more confident air and ask better questions.Another smart strategy is to act like a consultant, rather than a job candidate. Treat the conversation as though you were advising them on their business, says McLeod. Read everything you can about the company beforehand, and talk to the manager the way you would if you were already part of the team- discuss her thoughts on the approach a competitor is taking, or how shifts in the marketplace have affected business. Youll come across as knowledgeable, and theyll be better able to project how youd fit into the office culture.4. Making a Big PurchaseConfidence is key if youre planning to buy a home or a car- not only can salespeople sense uncertainty, but being wishy-washy makes you more likely to stumble into a decision you might regret. If youre outside of your comfort zone, heres the first step to achieving self-assurance Dont fly blind, urges certified life and business coach Kathy Nelson. Do plenty of research, ask people in the know who you trust for their ideas and opinions, and weigh all the pros and cons.Next, formulate a calculated course of action before going into negotiations. Practical, not emotional, decisions are a hallmark of self-confidence, explains New York-based psychotherapist Sheenah Hankin, author of Complete Confidence. Decide what your bottom line price is, and do not talk yourself out of it. If you go in with your mind made up, youll be less likely to be swayed by a charming salesperson or guilt-inducing selling techniques (This is the belastung time this low price will be offered, We have another bid on this property, so act now).5. NetworkingThe more charisma you possess, the more priceless connections youll make at industry get -togethers. But how do you mentally gear up to approach complete strangers? It can be nerve-wracking if you are thinking just about yourself and what you want to get from the experience- not to mention that you could come across as needy or greedy, says Nelson. Instead, go with the intention to give instead of to get. Look at this as an opportunity to help out, whether by introducing someone to a useful good or service that you provide, connecting him or her to a key player who could boost his or her career path, or advising on a work dilemma. Extensive research, as detailed in University of Pennsylvania professor Adam Grants book Give and Take, has found that those who go out of their way for others experience greater success.During the event, Nelson emphasizes setting a goal to meet at least three new people who you really click with (having a goal will keep you motivated to work the room). When striking up a conversation, ask open-ended questions What attracted you to this field? What do you do outside of work? suggests Nelson. Focus on finding out what you have in common. That part is important, because as soon as you realize that you have shared ground with another person, be it that you used to work at the saatkorn company or you both have family in France, your relationship will naturally progress to a greater level of comfort- and as a result, your confidence will soar.6. Dealing With a FrenemyConfidence is all about being yourself, so the more honest you are, the more self-assured youll become. Whether a so-called friend consistently cancels at the last minute, or you find out shes been gossiping behind your back, being straight with her is the best course of action. In a calm tone of voice, simply tell her how you feel about an event that upsets you, says Hankin. Start with one sentence I feel (hurt, annoyed) when you (fill in the blank). Stop there and let her respond. If her reply is benign, it can instigate an open conversation. If she gets defens ive, dont back down. Repeat the single sentence- even if you feel nervous or bad- and then say, Thanks for listening, urges Hankin. No justifications, explanations, or apologies are necessary. Should she become truly rageful, just walk away or hang up. Nothing can be resolved until both of you cool down.Still finding it hard to initiate such a loaded conversation? Recall other moments when you acted bravely under similarly stressful circumstances, suggests Nelson. Then think about how you can apply what you learned here. Remembering how you pulled it off successfully in the past will give you extra courage to face the present situation.More From DailyWorth5 Secrets to SuccessHow Many Conversations Are You Avoiding?Awkward How to Handle Sticky Money SituationsPhoto of mug courtesy of Shutterstock.

Skills shortages impacting on business

Skills shortages impacting on business Skills shortages impacting on businessPosted October 13, 2011, by Josie Chun Skills shortages are posing real problems for businesses when it comes to production and service delivery and are set to intensify, according to a recent report from the Australian Industry Group (Ai Group). Some argue they are the number one future threat to economic growth. The greatest shortages are of metal fitters, machinists and engineers, for whom over 50 per cent of positions are unfilled. Shortages are also significant for other metal trades and business administration managers, for whom a third of vacancies remain unfilled. The difficulties in filling vacancies stem from a variety of causes businesses notlage being able to find applicants with the required specialised skills, applicants not possessing the necessary general skills (communication, team work, literacy and numeracy, and problem-solving skills), and lack of local training leading to a dearth of local people with the skills needed by industry in their area. For many positions, there are simply not enough applicants. How businesses are coping with skills shortages Over a third of businesses believe there is a high to extreme risk of skills shortages negatively impacting their business this year. This rises to almost half (47.5 per cent) when businesses project this risk to 2015. As a result, almost half of businesses have placed skills shortages as a high priority and are currently implementing strategies to deal with the issue. The strategies they are using include increasing house training, increasing their focus on apprentices, helping employees to multi-skill, improving skills utilisation by better aligning skills with work performed, and redesigning jobs around available skills. Outsourcing or sub-contracting work is also a popular strategy. Still, almost 13 per cent of companies are forced to limit production levels because of skilled staff shortages. One in ten co mpanies would like to recruit from overseas to help fill the shortfall, though this is a much less attractive option to those in the construction industry compared to the manufacturing and services sectors. 2 lessons about happiness that completely changed my mindset2 lessons about happiness that completely changed my mindsetRecently, Ive had two eye-opening realizations about life. Spoiler alert Theyre actually not all that groundbreaking. But theyve helped me feel happier when things arent going as planned, and I can almost guarantee theyll do the same for you.Truth 1 Everyone, at any given time, is feeling sad, stressed, or bummed out aboutsomethingNo ones life is as perfect as it seems. Now, this might seem incredibly obvious. But with our highly filtered social media feeds, its easy to think that everyones real lives are just as happy and sunny as their Instagrams filled with sunsets, smoothie bowls, and dinners with friends.Whether its a major obstacle - a sick loved one, a failed marriage - or a more minor setback - a delayed flight, fallout with a friend, pressure from their boss - every single rolle you know is dealing with some situation thats sorta shitty.I dont mean to b e a bummer I just want us to get real for a second. BecauseIm completely guilty of it too.I pretty much only post photos of vacations, fun workouts, gorgeous dinners, or career achievements.I dont post about the times when my anxiety makes me stay in bed all day on a Sunday, or when I wonder what the hell Im doing with my life, or why Im not as successful or happy as others seem to be. As my mom reminded me once, if someone looked at my life on social media feeds, theyd be impressed, and maybe even a little bit jealous.Another example I was recently talking to an old friend about her new relationship. She now lives halfway across the world in Australia, so clearly I dont know too many details about her life. All I know is that she and her boyfriend always look incredibly joyful on social media (as most do). In fact, she is happier than ever with her new partner. But she reminded that even being in a relationship isnt always easy. It takes effort, it takes personal development work, it takes check-ins with each other. They fight. They go through hard times. Its not all sunshine and cozy Sunday-night dinners, although thats what we see on Instagram.Point being, people arent always 100% happy. And if youre going through something difficult, youre far from alone. Now for the tough love.Truth 2 Feeling sorry for yourself isnt going to help you feel happierDont get me wrong- I fully believe its okay to not be okay. Its okay to feel anxious or depressed. Its okay to be angry or disappointed in someone. We live in a time when mental health is being talked about more openly, and thats amazing. Talk about how you feel. Go see a therapist if you want. Allow yourself to feel bad.In fact, one way to get happier is to acknowledge your negative thoughts, rather than try to stop them. As this excellent New York Times article puts it, own your worries. When you are stuck in a negative cycle, acknowledge it. Think to yourself Im worrying about work, or Im obsessing about my ex. T hen, challenge those thoughts, or rewrite them. Instead of thinking, Im a failure, think instead Ive had a setback at work, but Im going to learn from it and move in. (Yep, this is a simplistic description of what it means to practice mindfulness, that happiness buzzword you see everywhere.)Dwelling on the past and ruminating over what happened - what that person did wrong, what you did wrong - keeps you parked there, in the past. And continuing to focus narrowly in on yourself, your fears, your worries isnt the way to help yourself feel better. So heres another game-changing way to stop feeling sorry for yourself Take the focus away from yourself, and put it on bringing value to others. Isnt that what the world needs more of, rather than rumination and negative thinking?I dont mean you have to go sign up for the Peace Corps or even have a steady volunteer gig. (Although you should if you have the time) But here are a few little to help others, and in effect, help yourself, feel be tter.Talk to a stranger. Strike up a conversation with someone after your yoga class, at the grocery store, or in the coffee shop. Theres literally no drawback, and major potential upsides.Write. Some research suggests that writing in a journal for 15 minutes a day can lead to a boost in overall happiness and well-being. Then, share it If youre reading this, you probably know how great it feels to know someone else is going through the same stuff you are.Provide something to someone in need. Offer a protein bar or a bottle of water to a homeless person. Donate clothes or bedding to Goodwill. Give your sister that shirt shed always steal from you.Send a long email to an old friend. Fill them in on your life, and ask about theirs.Call your grandparents. Or your parents. Thank them for everything they do for you. If youre lucky enough to live nearby, go see them in person.Obviously, these ideas arent guaranteed to make you jump with joy, and some issues ansturm much deeper than quick f ixes. But take it from me They might just make those tough times a little easier, which is all we can really want, right? This article was originally published on ThriveGlobal.com.

These are the workout routines of healthy billionaires

These are the workout routines of healthy billionaires These are the workout routines of healthy billionaires Industry icons with billion-dollar net worths rely on exercises and other wellness habits to be highly-functioning individuals. And somehow, they manage to not only succeed, but also to manage to do a lot to manage the stress of running enormous companies and more money than would sustain normal behavior. Here are some of the practices they’ve used to stay healthy.Martha Stewart Martha Stewart told The New York Times about her wellness habits.“Exercise is a necessary part of the day. I went to the gym this morning. I have a really great trainer in the city. We’ve worked together for at least eight years. Or I do yoga with James Murphy. I like to spin, but I don’t have enough time to do it. I also have a green juice that I drink every single morning. It’s very important. You can be the most beautiful person on earth, and if you don’t have a fitness or diet routine, you won’t be beautiful,” she told the publication.Bill Gates After the Microsoft executive left the compan y in 2008, it was reportedly a common practice for him use the treadmill in his house by Lake Washington while watching the Teaching Company’s “Great Courses” DVDs, when he started viewing the “Big History” DVDs, according to The New York Times Magazine- they later inspired him to bring content to schools through the Big History Project.Oprah WinfreyWinfrey told People about her fitness efforts last year.“Sky, mountains, creeks, trees, grass, wildflowers â€" I just can’t seem to get enough. So I made a vow this summer to log my 10,000 steps each day and get outdoors to do it,” she told the publication.Trainer Bob Greene also commented on the media mogul’s “boot camp” in O, The Oprah Magazine, back in 2003, saying that she did “forty-five minutes of aerobic exercise, including at least two of the following: power walking on a graded treadmill (up to 10 percent), jogging, elliptical exercise, stair-stepping or rowing,” six mornings weekly as part of her card iovascular exercise, adding that she did “thirty to 40 minutes of strength training, usually two days in a row, followed by a day off. Oprah preferred to train before her aerobic workout. Her warm-up: a 15-minute power walk,” four or five times weekly as part of strength training, among many other things.Jeff BezosThe Amazon executive told The Wall Street Journal in 1999 about how much rest he gets.“I just feel so much better all day long if I’ve had eight hours,” he told the publication.Bezos also told Thrive Global more about his beliefs on sleep.“Mostly, as any of us go through our lives, we don’t need to maximize the number of decisions we make per day. Making a small number of key decisions well is more important than making a large number of decisions. If you shortchange your sleep, you might get a couple of extra “productive” hours, but that productivity might be an illusion. When you’re talking about decisions and interactions, quality is usually more imp ortant than quantity,” he said.He has also garnered attention lately over the size of his arms.Mark ZuckerbergArnold Schwarzenegger asked the Facebook executive about his exercise practices during a Townhall QA on Facebook in 2015.“Staying in shape is very important. Doing anything well requires energy, and you just have a lot more energy when you’re fit. I make sure I work out at least three times a week - usually first thing when I wake up. I also try to take my dog running whenever I can, which has the added bonus of being hilarious because that basically like seeing a mop run…” Zuckerberg wrote in the comments section.

How to Ask Your Boss for a Better Worklife Balance

How to Ask Your Boss for a Better Worklife Balance How to Ask Your Boss for a Better Worklife Balance You are feeling exhausted at work. It seems like your life is out of control. You are not sure you can handle it anymore. It may be time to have a discussion with your boss about feeling healthy and productive. It may be time to ask your boss for a better work-life balance. This post explains how to do it. Remember to audit yourself beforehand You may be feeling overworked and exhausted, but that does not always mean it is the boss’ fault. Before confronting the boss about your busy schedule, check if you are doing all you can to do to improve your work-life balance. Are you committing to projects you cannot complete? Are you managing your time wisely? Try some applications like Time Doctor that measure what you are spending time on throughout the week. Audit yourself and your work habits to see what can be cut out. See if you can discover work-life balance by yourself. Take a step back and review your priorities Do you have a hard time saying no? If so, it is very easy for your priorities to get out of hand at work and home. Take a step back. Review if you are bringing your work home with you or bringing home issues to work. Make a list of your priorities. Write them down. Organize them by highest to lowest priority. Next, read the list out loud to yourself and see if it makes sense to you. You are verbalizing and annotating your work-life balance, in order to be honest with yourself before addressing your boss. If you are positive you need a better work-life balance it is time to do the following. Ask for a brief meeting Set up a meeting that will only last about 15 minutes. Make sure it does not interrupt the boss’ work-life balance. Schedule around his/her time, not yours, and make sure you do not cancel the meeting. Present your findings Do not waste the boss’ time if you are not sure what you are going to say. Do not approach the boss in a confrontational tone that demands he/she takes action to make you feel better. Show the boss what you discovered. Explain how you came to that conclusion. Be quick, calm, and do not feel intimidated. Instead, ask for suggestions. The boss may have a great deal to offer you in terms of advice. You will never know, however, if you have nothing logical to present explaining why your work-life balance is out of control. Try working with human resources The HR department of any company is there to assist you. See if you can move hours around, work longer and fewer days a week, or even work from home. Obviously, not all jobs allow for a person to work from home or change schedules, but it never hurts to ask HR about flexibility a company offers to improve work-life balance. Ask for time off and make the most of it Things like vacation days, sick days, and personal days exist for a reason. When you get to use them, make the best of it! Disconnect from everything work-related. Leave out-of-office messages for emails and make your weekends all about you. Prepare for your vacation properly by following all company rules for time off. Work can always be handled wisely if your brain is recharged and feeling productive. And by all means, when you have time off, play hard. You will feel much better when it comes time to play hard.

Dos and Dont for Making Connections on LinkedIn

Dos and Dont for Making Connections on LinkedIn Dos and Dont for Making Connections on LinkedIn 20LinkedIn, which years ago was known as Facebook for old people, is now the top social network for professionals. It boasts more than 200 million users and is used by the majority of the Fortune 100. If you’re not on it every day, you need to be. And there are some tricks to making connections on LinkedIn. Making connections on linkedin wasnt around  when I was new to the business world. At that time, you had to attend in-person networking events to meet anyone. But then, along came the marvelous invention of LinkedIn, and suddenly you can interface with an exponentially larger number of contacts in a fraction of the time. There is, however, a right way and a wrong way  of making connections on linkedin. To  meet new contacts on LinkedIn, here are a few dos and don’ts. Don’t wait for people to find you. Although this will happen eventually, it’s much more efficient to proactively connect with people by searching for former colleagues and business associates (the search function is on the top of every page). When you start typing a person’s name, a list of potential connections appears. You can also find connections by perusing the “People You May Know” section, as well as your current connections’ profiles. Do personalize every connection request. My biggest LinkedIn pet peeve is when people I don’t know or don’t remember send me the default connection message. Increase your chances of getting a positive response by typing a friendly, informative message reminding the person of who you are. If you don’t know them yet, make sure you say why you feel it will be a mutually beneficial connection. Do interact with contacts. In addition to fully completing your profile, participate actively in groups related to your industry and areas of interest, and connect with other members. Endorse and write recommendations for contacts you know well, and post interesting news items you think your contacts will find useful. Don’t spam or impose. Never send a blanket request to all 200 of your contacts. This is more likely to annoy people than result in any good input. Also, take care not to message people you barely know asking about job opportunities, leads, or referrals. This puts contacts in an uncomfortable position. Because they aren’t able to give you exactly what you want, they’ll probably just ignore you. Do target individuals for informational interviews. Search LinkedIn for companies you think would make terrific places of employment (or clients, partners, etc.). Identify individuals who perform job functions similar to you and ask them if they’d be willing to have a 15- to 30-minute conversation about their career trajectory and their role now. Your goal is to use this initial talk as a jumping-off point to a one-on-one personal relationship that could bear fruit down the line. Readers, how have you had experience making connections on linkedin? What are your tips for making connections on LinkedIn?

Waivers for Joining the Military

Waivers for Joining the Military Waivers for Joining the Military Waivers for entrance into the military are available, but they are not easy to obtain. There is a long list of reasons why the military may disqualify a potential recruit: illegal activity, medical conditions, minimum height, and even age. The recruit needs to have a compelling reason for requesting a waiver, and even then its not guaranteed. How to Seek a Waiver Upon Enlistment In order to get approval for a disqualifying issue, you will need a recruiter who knows how the process works and who is willing to invest the time and effort. But thats only the first step. Once the recruiter agrees to put in a request for a waiver, the chain of command will have to approve it. The more serious the waiver the higher up the chain of command it will have to travel, and the longer it will take. Common waivers have an easier process to follow. The more difficult issues, such as seeking a waiver for a serious medical condition or criminal activity, usually have a strict timeline and are much more difficult to obtain. Most Commonly Approved and Disapproved Waivers There are several common waivers people apply for.  Some are almost guaranteed depending upon the job, and some are almost always denied.  Here are the most common waivers. Morals (criminal history) Waiver: Getting a waiver for a felony record is rare, but in times of need such as war, many of these waivers may be approved to meet staffing requirements. Juvenile records are subject to review as well by the military. LASIK and PRK Vision Repair Surgery: Usually waivers for recruits who have undergone LASIK or PRK eye surgery are easily processed but require a six-month post-surgery recovery time first.  After receiving a clean bill of health from a military doctor, the waiver will be processed (note this doesnt guarantee approval). Color blindness: You can be color blind and still join some branches of the military but may not qualify for certain jobs.  For instance, a number of combat operations jobs in the Navy and Marine Corps require personnel to be able to see vivid reds and greens. The same goes for many special operations and aviation jobs (the Air Force is particularly rigid about enforcing its color-blindness disqualification). Asthma: The recruit has to be able to prove he or she no longer has asthmatic issues or takes asthma medications.   ADHD /ADD: Often younger children can be misdiagnosed or grow out of such behavior and focus issues. Full medical records are required if the applicant was ever treated for ADD or ADHD with any medication other than Ritalin, Adderal or Dexedrine. Broken bones: If you have a broken bone that has healed without surgery, youre likely to have your waiver approved.  However, surgeries with metal or other instruments to secure bones and ligaments or other body parts can be disqualifying.  You will need all associated paperwork from your doctor, surgeon, physical therapist to present for military medical review. Age: Jobs in special ops rarely have age waivers, but they do occur on a case by case basis.  Regular military age waivers for professional jobs in the legal, medical, religious fields are often waived due to force requirement needs.

Cyborg Dragonfly Takes to the Air

Cyborg Dragonfly Takes to the Air Cyborg Dragonfly Takes to the Air Cyborg Dragonfly Takes to the Air Swarms of tiny, insect-like robots may someday do our dirty work, taking air samples in hazardous or inaccessible environments, searching out survivors in disasters, and maybe even hunting down an enemy. In recent years roboticists have made great strides in producing the miniscule flyers that might perform such jobs. But however miniature and ingenious their inventions, they all are faced with the same problem: power. At small scales, manmade wings arent strong enough to carry their own power source. Or, to put it another way, batteries are just too heavy for tiny wings. As a result, few insectile robots can stay aloft for any useful duration. The answer to the problem of powering tiny flight may be to give up trying to imitate life. Why are trying to mimic biology? asks Professor Jesse Wheeler, a biomedical engineer at Draper Laboratory. Why dont we leverage what its doing alreadyhave a manmade system for guidance and navigation, tell it where to go, and let it handle all the rest. In other words, instead of making a bugbot, make a bugborg. To do so, Wheeler turned to the dragonfly, an extraordinary aviator among insects. It can cross oceans, reach speeds in the 20s of miles per hour, can hover, can fly straight up and straight down, and catches all its prey mid-flight. It also has a simple, well-studied nervous system, with 16 neurons known to be devoted to navigation. If Wheeler could stimulate those neurons, he might be able to override a dragonflys decision-making processwhatever that might beand make it go where he wanted it to. A closeup of the backpack board and components before being folded and fitted to the dragonfly. Image: Draper Laboratory Stimulating just those navigational neurons is not so simple. They are bundled with thousands of other neurons in a dragonflys hair-thick nerve cord, which runs the length of its body, much like a spinal cord. Fire an electrical pulse, no matter how small, at the navigation neurons and youll be sure to stimulate hundreds of surrounding neurons as well. So Wheeler and his colleagues decided to engineer the neurons so that they would be sensitive to something other than electricity. They used some gene snippets known to make the retina sensitive to light and added it to the 16 navigational neurons. Now, when a light hits them it has no effect on the surrounding neurons. This feat of bioengineering raised a new problem. How were they to get light signal from the dragonflys wee backpack into the nerve cord? Fiber optic cable, though flexible over long distances, is too brittle for the kind of hairpin bend they needed. They used a tiny optrode to wrap around the cord at one end and attached to the backpack at the other. The backpack itself folds like a piece of origami, has miniature solar pyesanels, and can wirelessly transmit data, in addition to controlling the insect with light pulses. Though DragonflEye, as the engineered robobug has been named, has yet to be steered by someone other than itself, all the partsthe bioengineered cells, the MEMS backpack, and the optrodeshave come together in a mere year and a half. Wheeler attributes the speed of development to the plethora of engineers at Draper. We have about 2,000 multidisciplinary engineers who can help develop things very quickly and can solve problems on demand, he says. This spring the buzzborg took its first flight. As soon as we let him go, he took off, says Wheeler. We had to chase him around, had a little game of tag going on. It was really exciting to see that the dragonfly was able to get away from us. A lot of work went into that. Michael Abrams is an independent writer. For Further Discussion Why are trying to mimic biology? Why dont we leverage what its doing alreadyhave a manmade system for guidance and navigation, tell it where to go, and let it handle all the rest.Prof. Jesse Wheeler, Draper Laboratory

What to Ask Your Boss When You Have a New Project - The Muse

What to Ask Your Boss When You Have a New Project - The Muse What to Ask Your Boss When You Have a New Project When I started at my current role, my manager told me, “The first time you do this task, it’ll take an hour. But once you do it several more times, it should only take you about 15 minutes.” And she was right! Eventually, after doing it every day, it became so second nature I could do it on autopilot- which left me more time to spend on other, more challenging projects. Since this lesson was so valuable to me, I decided to approach every new project I was handed by asking this one simple question: How long should this take me while I’m learning it and how long once I’m doing it routinely? This opens up so many doors for you- both in terms of your productivity and how you work with your manager. For one thing, it helps you put the task into perspective. If you know it’ll take two hours, you can set aside that amount of time when you first tackle it. On the other hand, if your boss says it should only take 20 minutes, you know you don’t have to clear an entire afternoon. But the biggest benefit perhaps is that it helps to highlight any gaps between what your manager’s expectations are and how you’re interpreting them. For example, if they say it shouldn’t take more than 10 minutes, but you find yourself spending several hours on it, that’s cause for concern. Maybe they forgot to mention shortcuts you could take. Maybe you didn’t quite understand the instructions. Or, maybe your boss has never done the project before themselves so they’re unaware of how time-consuming it is. Whatever the case, it’s important to communicate that it’s taking longer than predicted. That’s why knowing this timeframe from the get-go helps you prioritize, while also holding your boss accountable. Not to mention, it’s an easy way to “manage up”- you can set guidelines for how you manage your time, and your boss can keep track of how quickly you’re picking up new skills and getting comfortable with certain projects. Plus, isn’t it a great feeling to know exactly what you’re getting into? I certainly think so.

4 things that wont be good for your career during the holidays

4 things that won't be good for your career during the holidays 4 things that won't be good for your career during the holidays The holidays are in full swing, and people are getting ready to relax during some much-needed time off from work. Here’s  what you shouldn’t be doing when it comes to your career this season.Acting inappropriately at your company’s holiday partyJust don’t.  Given the current social climate, you’ll need to take extra caution with your behavior. But don’t get me wrong: Even if this Weinstein era hadn’t happened, you would never, ever have permission to make any of your colleagues feel uncomfortable - anywhere. So apply this mindset to how much alcohol you have with professional peers: As Ask a Manager blog author Alison Green points out in U.S. News World Report, “getting drunk at the holiday party” is never a good idea.“Office parties can feel like social functions, but they’re still work events. That means that the same rules you’d follow for other work events apply here, including that you shouldn’t drink to excess. Lowering your inhibitions around colleagu es â€" especially to the point that you can’t judge whether you’re annoying or harassing people â€" is a good way to end up harming your professional reputation,” she writes.Yes, the alcohol may be flowing, but you shouldn’t act like a funnel for it in front of your boss. Plus, from the looks of it, it seems like employers agree: More are cutting back on the alcohol at holiday parties this year.Going along with a job you hate because it’s the end of the yearIt might be December, but you don’t have to push off your job search until 2018.With people waiting to get a new job in the new year,  now might be the time to strike while the iron is hot, and go into January feeling strong.Completely zoning out at work…We know that American workers don’t always feel engaged in the office, but if you’re in that group, you should at least try to make an effort. If you work in a high-pressure, fast environment, you probably won’t want your boss catching you daydreaming about you r approaching holiday plans too many times. That being said, you can use science to plan the best vacation ever - just on your own time.…or being hyperconnected on your holidays offSince Christmas falls on a Monday this year,  you probably aren’t one of the lucky people who have the day afterward off - so you should savor every free moment you get.Get a head start on your digital detox by setting aside at least six hours for it to work. After all, you won’t want to look back on your free time during this festive season and only remember being glued to your phone.Use your time with family and friends wisely.

The space industry is coming to your town. What does it mean and how to get ready

The space industry is coming to your town. What does it mean and how to get ready The space industry is coming to your town. What does it mean and how to get ready We’re on the brink of something huge. With the space industry exploding in the US and around the globe, maybe it’s about time we started thinking about the ways to join in. The truth is, sooner or later, the space industry will come to your country, maybe even your town. And when that happens, are you going to make the best of it? But don’t jump on the bandwagon just yet. Here’s a quick overview of what you can expect in the upcoming years. It might help you make a well-informed (rather than rash) decision. But wait, what is the space industry?   First, let’s clear some terms here. As you probably suspect, the space industry isn’t just about ‘boldly going where no one has gone before’ or shooting Tesla Roadsters to Mars.   No, it starts much closer to home. About 100km from where you’re standing right now. Ever heard of the Karman line? That’s what experts call the boundary between Earth’s atmosphere and outer space. For all legal and regulatory purposes, it’s 100 km above the sea level.   Unsurprisingly, people tend to believe the space industry ‘happens’ above the Karman line. Probably that’s why it seems so unreachable to many of us. But at the end of the day, those satellites won’t build themselves. Neither will the rockets that take them into space. But wait, somebody has to make components for all of those too? And what about the launch and landing sites? Then you have transportation… All of these (and many others) engage in activities that make up the space economy.   But then you also have upstream and downstream space economy and things get a bit confusing again. Well… The upstream economy involves everything going from Earth to space. That includes designing, manufacturing, servicing, launching, operating, and innovations related to everything that enables space exploration.   The easiest way to understand the downstream economy is to picture the flow of data and materials coming from space down to Earth. All satellite communication, GPS, broadcasting services, pictures, or any data you use in your everyday life.         Not just a government thing anymore You know the story. Some years ago, a certain South African entrepreneur asked how much for a rocket. About $65 million, they said. The price seemed ‘astronomical’, to say the least.   Instead of quitting right there, he did some research. He discovered the components for a spaceship only make up for about two percent of the final price. He decided to build the rocket himself.   What’s more, it would cost only a fraction of what other aerospace manufacturers charged.   The entrepreneur? Elon Musk. The company? SpaceX.  And the rest is history. SpaceX is not the first and definitely not the only private aerospace industry project in history. But it is the one that marked a new era for space commercialization. And it’s also the only one your parents ever heard about. For five years, SpaceX worked on Falcon 9, a rocket that would deliver cargo to ISS. Costs? Something under 400M USD. Based on a NASA study, the in-house cost of a similar rocket would be 1.4B USD.   NASA and other national or international agencies spend billions of dollars on similar activities every year. But still, more than 75% of space activity in 2016 was private.   Eighteen successful launches by a private company marked 2017 as a historical moment in the commercialization of space. (SpaceX broke its own record in 2018 with 20 successful launches.) Along came billionaires and startups In 2017, 16 of the world’s richest people either already had a space company of their own or invested in one. Apart from the three best-known ones, Elon Musk (SpaceX), Richard Branson (Virgin Galactic), and Jeff Bezos (Blue Origin), the list also includes Bill Gates (Kymeta), Mark Zuckerberg (SETI), Larry Page (Planetary Resources), Paul Allen (Stratolaunch), Yuri Milner (Planet), and others.   Besides, hundreds of space startups, if not thousands, have been founded over the past years. What’s more, the amount of money investors are pouring into them could easily make anybody’s head spin. Just to give you an idea of what numbers are. Since 2000, more than $16 billion has been invested in space startups, two thirds of that in the past five years.   In November 2019, Director of the Office of Space Commerce at the Department of Commerce, Kevin O’Connell, said that during his time there, he met about 50 people ready to invest more than “$2T of private money in the space sector.“ That’s 2,000,000,000,000 dollars.   Can you see how big this is getting? The future is already here Several things enabled Space 2.0, as experts call the new era of space exploration. This new era is defined by cost reduction, new approaches and possibilities, and small private companies.     First, the five-ton satellites of the past were miniaturized to a pico-/nanoscale. Their weight? Anywhere from 0.1 kg to 10 kg. Sure, you could still find a few really big ones but who would pay for them when there are satellites you could easily fit in your pocket.   Second, the age of internet, innovation and general evolution of technology. It’s almost impossible to avoid all the buzzwords tech people use nowadays. But behind each of these buzzwords there’s always a very real technology like AI, IoT, cloud computing or blockchain. Last but not least, the teams needed for research became smaller thanks to the philosophy of “everything that I can do myself, I will do which led to foundations of small, private companies penetrating the market. And Space 3.0 with its man-on-Mars KPI’s is just around the corner.   Why should you care?   You don’t have to, really. But this is going to be huge, whether you care or not. Like, trillion-dollar huge. Does that really trigger no fear of missing out? Let me put it this way. Did you ever wish you invested in an internet business like Amazon or Google back in the 1990s? Well, here’s your chance. This time it’s in space.   Still a non-believer? Let‘s talk numbers then.   In 2017, the space economy was valued at about 350B dollars. In 2016, it was 329B dollars, which grew from 323B in 2015. This only loosely foreshadows what’s coming next.   Doesn‘t matter which predictions you look at, it all goes (almost) “to infinity and beyond.“   Bank of America Merrill Lynch report on the future of space (great readingâ€" for more geeky tips check out the bonus part at the bottom) estimates the space economy will grow almost tenfold in the next decades. By 2045, it should reach $2.7 trillion. “Investing In Space” by Morgan Stanley puts forward a slightly more pessimistic number of at least $1.1 trillion by 2040.   Still, compared to the previous six decades of the industry’s existence (NASA was founded in 1958), that represents an astonishingly high growth in such a short time.   It‘s not just the numbers Let’s consider factors other than numbers now. Call them ‘qualitative’, if you like.   Everyone‘s beginning to take the space industry seriously. It‘s inevitable for the future of mankind. The mere fact that the US president ordered the Pentagon to form the sixth branch of the military, so-called Space Forces, could tell you something about where we’re headed. Space exploration could also present a solution to some of the world’s existential roblems like overpopulation, environmental degradation, or even potential cataclysmic collisions with comets or asteroids. That‘s why Elon Musk talks about going to Mars in 2025, Japan wants to extract resources from the Ryugu asteroid, and National Space Society pushes for orbital settlements in Low Earth Orbit (LEO).   You get the picture. It‘s really not a question of if, but when. Engineers only? Some experts believe the job market isn’t ready for a trillion dollar space industry. America’s space industry seems to have a hiring problem even today.   Right now, the American space industry employs around 200k people. And if that seems like a lot, you should know the number is dwindling every year. You could think it’s mostly engineers and technical personnel such as Space Instrument Systems Engineer, Space Software Engineer, Aerospace Engineer, or Mechanical Engineer. But it doesn’t end there. The space economy will also need skilled accountants and lawyers. For instance, the Outer Space Treaty desperately needs an update at this point, being more than 50 years old. As new markets are emerging and businesses need to cash returns on their investments, business developers and analysts will also play a crucial role in the upcoming years.   The same applies to data specialists, as the amount of data transferred to Earth today is nothing compared to what’s coming next. Sustainable rocket launches? You’ll need chemists for that. Measuring the impact of space on the human body? All kinds of medical professionals wanted.   The list goes on. But then you have professions that don’t even exist yet. According to Wired, you can make a living as LEO pilot calming down nervous first-time passengers.   Are you a psychologist? First travellers to Mars will find your support indispensable. A linguist? You’ve seen how that played out in Arrival, so be ready.   The plot of Gravity doesn’t strike far from the mark either. Somebody has to take care of more than 670,000 pieces of space debris larger than 1 cm in Earth orbit. The first pioneers, such as Japanese Astroscale, are already testing the waters. Not sure what job to pick?   Only time will tell which jobs are going to be in high demand, though. But if you want to make a safe bet, focus on the most relevant industries.   Which industries will become space industry leaders according to the World Economic forum?   Energy industry The energy industry is already the biggest industry on Earth. Over $8.4 trillion valuation and a 4.1% growth rate say it plainly: living on a planet or anywhere else, we’re always going to need more energy to power our engines and tools.   Mining industry                     Asteroid mining is likely to trigger something like the next gold rush. At least that’s what experts from Luxembourg‘s Space Resources Initiative believe. Still, keep in mind it was the companies producing shovels and jeans that profited most from the California Dream era. Transportation Companies like SpaceX or Virgin Galactic deal first and foremost in transportation. But even if you feel like you don’t have what it takes to score a job at SpaceX (or if you’re not American), getting any job in the aerospace or automotive industries might be a good place to start. The synergies between the two are deep and undeniable. Best advice? Stay curious If humans don’t fall victim to their worst tendencies anytime soon (such as bombing each other into oblivion or eradicating rainforests), there’s a pretty good chance we’ll get to see the marvels of the new space era. The aim of this short article was to give you a brief introduction to the vastness of the space economy and give you tips on where to focus your attention.   But at the end of the day, the best thing you can do is to remain open to change, stay excited about what comes next and prepare for the new opportunities, jobs including. Never stop learning new things. Embrace change as the only certainty and be ready to fly to the Moon. Maybe literally.   Bonus: Geeky resources for those who like to read To Infinity And Beyond â€" Global Space Primer The aforementioned report by Bank of America Merrill Lynch is an excellent start for anyone interested in in-depth reading about space economy. Alcohol consumption has risen by a staggering amount in the last 30 years

Alcohol consumption has risen by a staggering amount in the last 30 years Alcohol consumption has risen by a staggering amount in the last 30 years A massive new study that appeared in The Lancet, discovered a considerable surge in individual alcohol consumption across the globe.Based on the rates analyzed in the study’s test period, the researchers were able to estimate statistics going into 2030. Examining data sourced by The World Health Organization  and the Global Burden Of Disease Study, which themselves reviewed   189 countries, between the years, 1991 and 2017, researchers found that the total volume of alchohol consumed annually has risen by 70%; from 20, 999 liters, which was average back in 1991, to 35, 676 which is the median reported in 2017.Jakob Manthey, the study’s first author begs policymakers not to take these figures lightly, considering all of the serious health conditions that are associated  with excess alcohol  consumption.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!  A shift in demographic  factors“B efore 1990, most alcohol was consumed in high-income countries, with the highest use levels recorded in Europe. However, this pattern has changed substantially, with large reductions across Eastern Europe and vast increases in several middle-income countries, such as China, India, and Vietnam,” Manthey told Medical News Today.Manthey predicts, by 2030 Europe will no longer account for the majority of alcohol consumers. Currently, low-and middle-income regions are responsible for much of the surges. By 2030, 23% of the population is forecasted to engage in binge drinking once a month. Binge-drinking, for the purposes of the study, is defined as consumption that exceeds 60 grams of pure alcohol  during a single sitting.Perhaps the most worrying feature of the study, suggests that binge drinking is rising at a faster rate than the total volume of alcohol  consumed. Per capita, the amount of alcohol  consumption is expected to reach 7.6 liters, by the year 2030. Alcohol presents risk factors for so many defects and illnesses, saying nothing of its influence  on motor vehicle mortality rates, and  domestic violence instances. Over 10,800 people were killed in alcoholâ€"impaired crashes in 2017.      The American Psychological Association,  reports that heavy use of alcohol is intimately linked to instances of violent and aggressive behavior.Manthey said, “Alcohol use will remain one of the leading risk factors for the burden of disease for the foreseeable future, and its impact will probably increase, relative to other risk factors. Implementation of effective alcohol policies is warranted, especially in rapidly developing countries with growing rates of alcohol use.”Policy makers have to put some kinds of measures in place to accommodate for the celerity at which these figures are rising. The study concludes, “Based on these data, global goals for reducing the harmful use of alcohol are unlikely to be achieved, and known effective and cost-effective polic y measures should be implemented to reduce alcohol exposure.”You might also enjoy… New neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happy Strangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds 10 lessons from Benjamin Franklin’s daily schedule that will double your productivity The worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs 10 habits of mentally strong people
